On March 15, 1844 Samuel “Sammy” Fancy, held his first-ever sale in his home town in Scotland, auctioning off all of his most prized belonging: three lucky rocks, a horseshoe, and a half-eaten chicken leg. He made one pound in profit, which he promptly spent betting on a squirrel race.

Fancy’s insatiable desire to sell things has since blossomed into one of the worlds leading auction houses.
